fresh figs…

2011.08.27 § Leave a comment

fresh figs are so delish… the juicy plumpness is too luscious to squeeze… the unblemished fig feels like an miniture water balloon that gives slightly when pressed but not mushy… when cut open is brutally fragrant and bright…figs are one of the highest plant sources of calcium and fiber; full of antioxidant, flavonoids and polyphenols… nom nom nom thanks auntie =)

japanese cookout w/ chef tan

The other day chef tan wanted to do a cook out for us… to spend some time and chill… after his last okonomiyaki お好み焼き cookout my tummy was already growling… It seems that the boys definitely are better cooks… there’s a reason chef lui cooks more than i do… (i lots count how many times he’s done the deed vs me)… it makes us girls have no reason to step into the kitchen almost… tee hee…

Japanese fusion menu for the nite included:

  • Purple yam chips glazed over kikkoman sushi & sashimi soy, brown sugar, and water after deep fried in oil
  • Tobiko crab salad with avocado
  • Cold grilled eggplant (yaki-nasu) marinated in shoyu, ponzu, shichimi, sansho

  • Traditional japanese beef stew…  Nikujaga (肉じゃが)  – thinly sliced beef, carrots, potatoes cubed, onions in sweetened soy…
  • Pan-fried onigiri おにぎり drizzled lightly with soy
  • Tonkastsu pork chops glazed miso sauce, chef tan said it was a specialty of nagoya region where the miso is slightly sweeten and glazed over the panko fried porker

  • Burfday cake for the burfday boy chef tan

project mexico – broccoli soup

2011.07.20 § Leave a comment

summer is here (or lack thereof here in vancouver)… and my gf is getting married in mexico in a month… project mexico has been on and off around exam periods and sometimes it’s hard when there’s a lot of work, friends, and a bf… but having a bf that likes and can cook is such a bonus… so adapted thru him (who probably adapted thru gordon ramsay) broccoli soup

broccoli soup

2 broccoli crowns, cut of the florets

some cilantro

water boiling… season – cook with the salt (or some chicken essence)

boil approx 5 mins or until broccoli can be sliced thru with a knife

liquify in blender while still piping hot…

add drizzle of olive oil for gloss

smooth velvety texture in green goodness =)

my 1st attempt successful – consistency wonderful and not too thin…

Freedom (for now…) never tasted so sweet…

Beer on a hot summer’s day… I think I still prefer a Stella, an Asahi, or a Sapporo any day… Mmmmmmm

avocado shrimp croissants

almost every saturday after fellowship our group goes to our local hk styled cafe for some grub… recently they changed their menu and jacked up the prices… it is no longer “cheap frills” for late night… to makes matters worse they failed to keep one of my favorite dishes on the menu (prolly due to low margins… ) bastards!!!

what they failed to perform, mon l’amie was sweet enuf to deliver (last sunday to be exact)…

avocado shrimp croissant

freshly sliced avocados, sauteed shrimp of caramelized onions, bakery fresh croissants…. nom nom nom…
